A visit to Slamet’s house(18/08)

This half age mother was sun bathing in her terrace that morning. Smiling, she greeted us. Slamet is new as a SCI, 6 month ago, she felt from mlinjo tree. Her husband carried her into the house and laid her on the bed gentlyThe access to her house and the condition around her house are not accessible for wheelchair to help her doing the daily activities. It makes her dependent to others.

For those who had difficulty in mobility like SCI, decubitus is a common wound which is suffered. Decubitus is the damage or the death of skin which come about under the skin network, muscle, until the bone which occur because of the lifted in certain area continuously. It disturbs the blood circulation. In the acute stadium, decubitus can cause unpleasant smell. Slamet also suffers it. Ningsih, a nurse of KARINAKAS measured her blood pressure then examined the wound. With gloves and some medicine, Ningsih who assisted by her partners, took care the decubitus wound carefully. “It is better, Mrs. Slamet. Every day, ask others to clean and to give the medicine so that the skin network is better.” She left some bandage, plasters and medicine for decubitus wound and informed how to keep them to maintain the hygiene.

After that, Joko, a KARINAKAS physiotherapist, does the physiotherapy. Those who have SCI must do the physiotherapy every day. This activity can be done alone at home to strengthen the moving organ and prevent the stiffness of the moving organ so that they can do the daily activities (ADL/Activity Daily Living). Slamet’s family is also there to observe the medical activities. The information in how to treat the wound and do the therapy was given to Slamet and her family so that they can do the treatment by themselves at home.
