Villagers in some villages in the west of Merapi, especially in the hazardous areas, are still in the dark. Electricity is still off since the beginning of eruption. Government Electricity Company has already reconstructed the facility, but it still only reaches the lower areas. It will take long time to reach the highest areas. Therefore, many villagers that should be evacuated still stayed in their village to secure their villages from thieves and also to observe the activity of Merapi. They were located in the hamlet of Sabrang, Prontakan, Gemer, Tangkil, Ngandong, and Karanganyar in Ngargomulyo village, Dukun sub district, around 8 km from the peak of Merapi.

Central Java Government has started to build 366 temporary shelters for the survivors. Those are spread in three areas. 111 units are located in Banyubiru Village, Dukun sub District; 88 units are in Paras Village, Cepogo sub district, Klaten; and 167 units are located in Kepurun Village, Manisrenggo sub District, Klaten. Each unit is 28 square meters wide. Consist of three rooms, the temporary shelter is using bamboo as its wall and spelter as its roof. It is predicted that each temporary shelter can be used for one or two years.

B. Coordination

  • KARINAKAS has already held psychosocial assistance in cooperation with some organizations. Tlatah Bocah Community and KARINAKAS operate in Sumber parish areas. Due to the dynamic number of IDPs, assessment is always conducted every morning and the implementation on the afternoon. We use traditional games for kids. This strategy appears to be the favorite since many adults and elders also understand the games and participate with their own way. The team always gives the psychological approach on every game they give and deliver it to the community.
  • In collaboration with Soegijapranata Catholic University of Semarang (UNIKA), KARINAKAS deliver psychological assistance for the kids and adults IDPs. Children become introvert or hyperactive due to their experience of disaster. Many adults need to be accompanied also, especially those who have psychological burden. Some psychosomatic ill are emerged among the adult IDPs.The biggest challenge is the lack of sharing experience culture. Many Javanese are not used to share their experience or their burden. Being secretive must be the biggest challenge for psychological assistance. UNIKA will serve in collaboration with KARINAKAS until December 7th, 2010 and will adjust the service area according to the IDPs mobility.
  • Dinamika Edukasi Dasar (DED) has committed to work with KARINAKAS until December 19th to deliver psychosocial assistance. The team has already started the assistance on Muntilan Sub district. Nowadays, the team will work in Pendowoharjo areas, Sleman District. Using painting and games - group method, the team works with and for the affected children.
  • In Bantul areas, there is a community, Kembanggede village that works in collaboration with KARINAKAS to serve the IDPs. The community is KARINAKAS partner in CMDRR project. With their capacity and compassion, the community members, with their own money, also provide the transportation for the returning IDPs. Now, they are looking for neglected IDPs in their areas and will continue their support. KARINAKAS will provide the relief items.
    • The identified needs come from the survivor are not only food items. They need to be assisted on food security and livelihood issues. In Diwak hamlet, KARINAKAS participated in the idea of making solidarity barn to manage food security for 10 hamlets. Team that consists of representation of each hamlet will manage the barn. This idea was already implemented before the big eruption on November 5th. It was stopped for more than a week due to the worsen situation. Now, the community has decided to continue the implementation. They will asked KARINAKAS support if they have prepared everything (warehouse, team, coordination system, distribution, etc
    • It is realized that every selected parish capacity need to be built. Not all of the selected parishes have sufficient capacity on disaster management. Furthermore, volunteers in the parish are limited. Capacity building for the parish team need to be conducted on the days a head in order to deliver emergency response and also rehabilitation project.
    • Up to now, KARINAKAS has managed in total 127 relief items. 23 items come from CIMOs fund and the rest come from in-kind donation and other funds. We are still in good spirit to conduct emergency response of Merapi Eruption. We will do our best to provide the responsibility and accountability of this project.
