A. General
Prambanan temple, Hindhu’s temple and a world heritage, is endangered due to the cold lava flood along Opak River near the compound of the temple. Volcanic material is located in 6 km from the temple. If high intensity rain comes, the flood will come and potentially damage the temple.
Volcanic Technology Development and Research Center (BPPTK) Yogyakarta said that most of the Merapi Volcano monitoring instruments was destroyed by the latest eruption. It would take more than a year to reconstruct all of the monitoring instrument system. Now, BPPTK is installing early warning system instrument and mapping the cold lava flood threat.
Villagers of Balerante village, Kemalang, Klaten District have already stayed in temporary shelters. Government of Central Java Province has finished those shelters on the first week of February 2011. Meanwhile, Residents Baselan Village, Village Glagaharjo, Cangkringan, Sleman District, Yogyakarta Province urged the shelter or temporary occupancy (huntara) be resolved. The construction of temporary shelter is delayed due to the legalization of land ownership.
Ministry of Forestry proclaimed that it would need IDR 5 billion to recover 1500 hectares of damaged forest. It is almost 25% of the whole forest area in Merapi slope. Every hectares will need 5 millions. The Ministry and Yogyakarta Province Government will discuss related to that issue and also the extension of disaster-prone areas (DPA). The Ministry of Forestry suggested that the DPA is 10 km from the peak of volcano in normal situation. The new DPA will be used for national forest.
Merapi Rorestation Consorsium which is consist of religious leaders, activists, and volunteers is doing green revolution on the slope of Merapi, particularly in Umbulharjo, Kepuharjo, and Glagaharjo village, Sleman District, Yogyakarta. 47 institutions participated on that occasion. This activity is going to be conducted until six months later.
B. Coordination
Relief items had been distributed to the survivors. Initial capital and retrofitting fund are already distributed 90%. The rest of the fund will be implemented on the next week. For further detail, please see attachment.
Psychosocial activities had been implemented also. It reached three districts, i.e : Sleman, Magelang, and Klaten. KARINAKAS worked in cooperation with AKSARA in Klaten, Naldhlatul Ulama in Sleman, and Tlatah Bocah in Magelang District. Each institution assisted children through psychosocial activities. There were some activities for children to encourage them after their experience of disaster, such as: traditional games, drawing, focus group discussion, religious activities for children, creating simple movies of disaster, etc. some partner will continue their assistance after the period of EA.
PWNU Yogyakarta as KARINAKAS partner in doing in-depth assessment has already gathering primary data from the field. They had done survey and data gathering in 12 villages, 3 districts, and 6 parishes. Now, the team is doing the data analysis process and will deliver the result and recommendations to KARINAKAS the second week of February.
The Caritas Internationalis Emergency Appeal program has been closed on February 16th, 2011. It was started on November 25th. EA program has been extended for several days since many changes happened in the process of program. KARINAKAS is ready for auditing process and also report conducting. Report will be submitted soon.
