It has been 3 weeks since Merapi erupted. Until today, the status is still ‘awas’. There are some survivors who stay in the barrack and some residents’ houses as their temporary shelter especially those who evacuated from zone 4.

The Merapi eruptions waken the conscience and solidarity. There are 259 Merapi tolls. It paralyzed the economy, transportation, tourism, and poultry. But, from it, there will be a value behind it.

For few days, ash rain occurred in Yogyakarta, Magelang, Boyolali, and Klaten. Pyroclastic which flew with the water through river overflew in Yogyakarta. The elements in pyroclastic from Merapi have the positive role for the economy and farming around Merapi.

Actually, barrack does not only consist of rice, sugar, instant noodle, soap, and tooth paste, here is a barrack where there were massage volunteers: “posko pijat tuna netra peduli merapi”. Massage donation seems unique. The blind volunteers who join Dewan Rehabilitasi Difabel Bersumberdaya Masyarakat dan Persatuan Tuna Netra Indonesia in Klaten with KARINAKAS made massage post.

Massage post is held from November 17 until November 19, 2010. The post is in Pemda Klaten office. Donation is not merely food item or non food item. Massage can become a donation. Besides, the volunteer can feel fresh after moving around delivering the aid, the survivors also can get free massage.

Children in Mindi hamlet, Kadilnggon village, Klaten district, Friday (11/03) gathered in IOM building at 14.00pm local time, KARINAKAS came to have activity with children on Inclusive Reading Community. Children from different education background and age were assisted to study in games by KARINAKAS education and medical team.

It started by singing together. Every child’s hand clapped each other.  Their feet moved to the right and left. Dodo, a cerebral palsy (CP), although he sit on the wheelchair, he clapped his hands also. His face turned cheerful as others do. As a good big brother, he asked his little sister to sing together with friends. She was busy with a book that facilitators brought. The other girl, named Via, has disability on hearing and speaking. She is a deft. She was also very happy to clap her hands with other children.

Not all of the survivors of Merapi volcano come back to their village. Some of them have lost their houses which were disappeared, buried by volcanic material or damage by the eruption. One of the hamlets is called Bakalan, in Argomulyo village. This hamlet placed in the red zone (KRB 3) of month Merapi and all the houses in this hamlet disappeared under the sand from the eruption. Now the native of the hamlet consisting of 88 house hold, lives in 6x7meter squares shelter for more or less 2 years which located in Kuwang with other survivors from different hamlets. Near the shelters, there are some pools made of excavated soil and covered by tarpaulins, and thousands of catfish breed there. Those pools and catfish were donation from the government as the alternative of their livelihood. Right now most of the survivors work as sand digger they can easily get 100thousand rupiahs is a day, it is not a small number for a day income. This condition makes some people leave their jobs and become sand digger.
